Obesity and the CT Angiography

Almost everyone thinks that they have a couple of extra pounds that they need to lose. Indeed, there are millions of people who have obesity. Some of these people are overweight because of genetics, or as a side effect of various kinds of medication. Other people are obesity because of poor lifestyle choices. These poor choices lead to many medical problems.

In order to effectively treat these medical problems, preventative scans such as the CT angiography might need to be done. This is a scan that produces detailed images of the major arteries and blood vessels in the body. The goal of the CT angiography is to check for various kinds of irregularities such as blood clots, aneurysms, and clogged arteries.

All of these medical problems can happen as a direct result of obesity. Take, for example, a person who likes to eat fast food all the time, and spends long hours sitting in front of a computer. Fast food, even though various companies are working harder to make their food healthier, is still inundated with large amounts of saturated fat and sugar.

When a person eats, the body takes what it needs and then discards the rest of the food. The body is unable to process large amounts of fat and sugar, so whatever it cannot process it releases into the bloodstream. The result is obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and possibly even diabetes.

All of these things have a direct effect on the arteries and blood vessels in the body, and so if a patient exhibits certain symptoms, a CT angiography will be done to determine the direct cause within the circulatory system. In some cases, a contrast material will be intravenously injected into the patient immediately prior to the scan.

People who have never had a CT angiography are, no doubt, very curious to find out what the procedure entails. The scanning procedure itself is done in an outpatient facility, which means that no hospital stay will be required. The patient should arrive to the scan wearing comfortable, loose fitting clothing.

That might see easy enough, but another requirement is that the clothing not contain any metal. This means that clothes with buttons and zippers will need to be avoided. Additionally, the patient should not be wearing any accessories (such as hearing aids or glasses) that contain metal in them. If metal is present, it will cause the machine to produce ineffective scans. If the patient does not have any clothing that is without metal in it, then the will be provided with a medical robe.

The patient is then positioned on an examining table, and the table is pushed back into the scanning machine itself, which slightly resembles a doughnut. The middle is where the examination table is located. On average, it takes about fifteen minutes to properly position the patient, but the scan itself takes only about a minute. Once the scan has been completed, the patient is usually able to resume their regular activities.
